What does

“clean fiber”

mean?

Fiber is referred to as clean when the vegetation matter has been removed.

What does

“vegetation matter”

or vm mean?

VM is referred to when an animal’s fur has anything in it; such as, poop, burrs, sticks, hay, seeds, stickers, etc.

Should I add

oil or conditioner

to my fiber

after I wash it?

No.  We will have to re-wash your fiber if it comes to us with those items added to it.

Will you process my

fiber if it has moths?

Moths can be very damaging to fiber.  It can also create issues for us at our Mill.  That’s why we reserve the right to decline fiber that has moths or eggs.

Will you process my

fiber if it has dander?

Dander in fiber can create issues for us at our Mill.  We do reserve the right to decline fiber that has dander.

Is there a charge

for hand feeding?

There is an up-charge for long fibers with a staple length >6” and some fine fibers that require hand feeding the equipment to produce a quality product.

What should I put

my fiber in to send

it to you or to drop

it off at OVFFM?

We prefer to receive customer’s fiber in plastic bags; most use trash bags.

If you want a specific fiber or type processed individually, please be sure to put that fleece in one bag along with its own Order Request Form.

If you have one specific type of fiber and one color that you want processed; such as white sheep’s wool, you can put more than one fleece in the plastic bag.  Again, along with the Order Request Form.

Will I receive

my fiber back

in plastic bags?

Yes, once your fiber is put in the que for processing, it is placed in a new bag.  That is the bag that your fiber will be delivered to you in.

Due to the increase in shipping costs for boxes, we have been shipping customers back their finished fiber orders in large shipping packages once we’ve vacuum sealed the fiber inside.

Special Notice:

Wool and most wool blends bounce back without an issue.  However, Alpaca doesn’t.  If compression is an issue for you, please let us know and we will work with you to obtain the most cost-effective way to receive your fiber order.

Do you have any

suggestions on how

to clean wool

comforters or quilts?

Yes, we suggest three methods.

Method One for comforters:

  • Remove the cover from the comforter.
  • You will have to remove any ties and open one end of the cover.
  • This will allow you to slide the cover off the batting.
  • The cover can then be safely laundered according to the specifications of the material.
  • Put the batting into your washer using your regular detergent and allow the washer to fill with warm water.
  • DO NOT ALLOW THE WASHER TO AGITATE.
  • Fill the washer until the batting is completely covered.
  • You may push the batting down to completely submerge it.
  • Let the batting soak for about 10 minutes and then spin out the water.
  • Refill again using the same temperature water for the rinse, soak, and then spin out.
  • Your wool batting does not need to be agitated to be cleaned.
  • You are ready to dry your batting.
  • Lay the batting out flat, reshaping it as you spread it out.

Method Two for comforters and quilts:

  • You may wash your comforter/quilt without removing its cover.
Pretreat any spots or stains on the cover.
  • Put the entire comforter or quilt into the washer.
  • Adjust the temperature of the water to the specifications of the cover material.
  • The Wool may be washed in Hot, Warm or Cool water.
  • DO NOT ALLOW THE WASHER TO AGITATE.
  • Fill the washer until the comforter or quilt is completely covered.
  • You may push the comforter/quilt down to completely submerge it.
  • Let it soak for about 10 minutes and then spin out the water.
  • Refill the washer again using the same temperature water for the rinse.
  • Soak, and then spin out.
  • You are ready to dry your comforter or quilt.
  • Lay it out flat, reshaping it as you spread it out.
  • After it is dry, you may need to use a warm iron to remove any wrinkles.

Method Three for comforters and quilts:

  • This method can be used without removing the cover or with removal of the comforter cover.
  • Place the comforter, quilt or batting into the bathtub.
  • Fill the tub with warm water or with a temperature suitable for the cover.
  • Use your regular detergent and push the comforter, quilt or batting under the water to complete submerge it.
  • Allow it to soak for about 10-15 minutes.
  • Drain the water out of the tub and prop up the comforter, quilt or batting allowing it to drain.
  • Let it drain for about ½ hour , you may wish to push on it to squeeze more water out.
  • Do not wring it out as it will cause the batting to separate.
  • Refill the tub for the rinse using the same temperature water, drain, press-against tub until most of the water has been removed.
  • Lay out flat to dry – reshaping it as you lay it out.
  • You may need to use a warm iron to press the wrinkles from the cover.
