There’s always so much to do in Adams County that you could always create a new trip to make more memories when you come back to pick up your fiber from us too!!!

June brings a lot of outdoor activities with a lot of adventure in good supply.

If you enjoy hiking trails, horseback trails, berry picking, and mushroom hunting, there’s Brush Creek State Forest which offers over 13,000 acres of productive hardwood forest land. Most of Brush Creek is made up of hillsides that are steep, hollows that are deep and ridge tops that are narrow. The wildlife is plentiful and the historic stone quarries are unique to the area.

If you enjoy catching a glimpse of migratory birds as they use the Edge of Appalachia as a stopover for rest and nourishment, then you’re going to enjoy special areas within this preserve. Buzzardroost Rock Trail is moderately difficult, but worth it to glimpse migratory birds. Portman Trail and Rieveschl Overlook offers over 160 species of birds and is the first stop when exploring over 20,000 acres of the Edge of Appalachia Preserve which is Ohio’s largest privately owned protected natural area.

The Edge of Appalachia Preserve, also known as, The Edge, offers unique qualities with each separate preserve. Brush Creek overlook offers picnic tables, an open pavilion, access to Ohio Brush Creek for canoes and kayaks. It also offers two trails, the Prairie Garden Trail which is brief and the Joan Jones Portman Trail which is 1.6 miles roundtrip.

You’ll want to visit the Lynx Prairie if you’re interested in viewing where The Nature Conservancy got its start in Ohio. There are over 120 species of birds including rarities, such as Texas sandwort and blueharts. The prairie also offers three interconnecting loop trails that are marked Red, White and Green.

If you’re interested in bird watching from the comfort of your car with the air conditioner on, then Abner Hollow is a good choice. The Buckeye Trail is on Abner Hollow Road, yet Abner Hollow is lightly traveled.

Maybe seclusion, while you’re hiking, is something that is of interest? If so, the Wilderness Trail comes highly recommended. The Wilderness Trail is one of the newest trails and offers over 100 species of birds, and the opportunity to relax while enjoying the sounds of grouse, wild turkey and other local wildlife.

If kayak and canoe activities are more your style, the 3rd Annual Paddlefest is being held on June 24, 2023 by the Adams County Health & Wellness Coalition.

If you don’t want to wait that long to enjoy some kayak or canoe time, then you’ll need to reach out to Moondoggie LIVERee located on Brush Creek Road in Manchester.

There’s also canoe and kayak access to Ohio Brush Creek at Creek’s Bend located at 3223 Waggoner Riffle Road in West Union.
